Planning a move? One thing you may have to deal with is moving heavy or bulky items. For some, that’s one of the most challenging parts of a DIY move—as professional commercial and residential movers, the team from Clemmer Moving and Storage understands this challenge, and we’re happy to share some of our tips.

Lighten Up

One of the best ways to make moving heavy items easier is obvious: light the load. Remove items from drawers—and the drawers themselves—and disassemble items as much as possible. This will make moving easier and also help when loading the truck as you won’t have to necessarily store all components together.

Make a Way

The last thing you want when moving heavy items is to have to step over obstacles. That’s not only a hassle, but it’s dangerous as well. Before you start hauling things, make sure the path is clear. This may even include removing doors in order to more easily get through the doorway with larger items.

Be Realistic—and Safe

It doesn’t matter that you’ve been hitting the gym lately, trying to lift very heavy items on your own just isn’t a good idea. Even if you think you can lift something doesn’t mean you should. Be realistic about what’s safe and reasonable, and wait until you have help to move larger, heavy items.

Protect Your Items

It’s pretty easy to hit walls and other obstacles when moving heavy items. Protect those items and your walls, floors, and doorways by wrapping furniture, using moving blankets, and taking other protective steps.

Have the Right Tools

There are tools used by professional movers to make moving heavy items easier, so have some of those same tools on hand when completing a DIY move. Dollies, lifting straps, hand trucks, stair rollers, and sliders are all excellent tools that allow you to safely move furniture and other large items.
