Avoid Injury When Moving

Are you planning to move soon in Philadelphia? The moving process can be hectic and lead many to act without concern about their physical health. But one wrong move and you could end up with a sprained muscle or broken foot!

At Clemmer Moving & Storage, our residential movers in Philadelphia have in-depth training in safe moving techniques. If you are getting ready to relocate, it might be a good idea to try some of our practices out for yourself.

Proper Preparations before Getting to Work

Whether you are DIYing that long-distance move or have hired a moving and storage company to help out, there are some steps you should take to prep for moving day. Make sure to get a good night’s sleep the day before you move. Also, make sure to eat some breakfast and drink something. You should also have plenty of water or another drink throughout the day to stay hydrated. If you are doing any lifting, consider performing some gentle stretches to loosen up your muscles.

You should also clear the main paths through the house of any small items and rugs that movers can trip over. Get an old towel and use it to wipe up any moisture that may have dripped on the floor too.

Use Proper Lifting Technique

It’s also important to practice good lifting technique during the move. First, make sure to wear proper clothing for the job, like:

  • Closed Toe Shoes
  • Flexible Clothing
  • Work Gloves

Try not to carry boxes that are overly full. If a box is heavy, consider moving some things to another box to lighten the load, especially if moving high-value items that could break if dropped!

When lifting boxes always bend at the knees and lift with your legs and knees. Avoid using your back. Avoid leaning overtop of the box as this also puts strain on your back. Instead, take a wide stance and hold the box close to your body when lifting and carrying it.

Use the Right Equipment

Speaking of moving day, you may have noticed that your cross-country movers use a number of tools to carry heavy items. Consider getting some of this equipment for yourself when relocating without a long-distance moving company. You can and should use:

  • Hand Trucks
  • Flat Dollies
  • Lifting Straps
